Nekole Thauvette is a mixed media artist based in Edmonton, Alberta.
With over 10 years experience in art education and personal practice, Nekole has developed a style of hybrid work which evolves from a dialogue between painting and collage.
Often in her work, you will find that subjects have been disconnected from their original context and are recreated as icons in an abstracted landscape. Nekole seamlessly collages paint spills, textures and images together with gestural strokes and desaturated colour pours to create mini narratives and 'inner-scapes' finished with a shiny resin coat or made into a digital print. She celebrated this style with her first solo art exhibition 'Navel-Gazing' in the winter of 2019 at Studio YEG.
Nekole's most recent series titled 'Bound' explores human nature and ways in which we seek to move through our limiting beliefs and underlying forces, such as ego, to meet our whole expressed self. Her use of bold flat geometrical shapes demand attention and help us acknowledge the presence of these underlying forces. Floating within surreal landscapes, you will see awkward tensions, propelling contrasts and comfortable sequences pushing and pulling us between our inner narratives.
Inspired by dadaist photo montages, surrealism, abstract expressionism and colour theory, Nekole encourages her viewers to reach beyond the literal and bring their own experience to finish the narratives of her work.
