Annette Sicotte

Visual Artist

“I paint the natural world around me in an effort to acknowledge the small things in life that make up ʻthe big pictureʼ.”

Annette studied at the University of Alberta and was awarded the Helen Moseson Samuel Scholarship in 1992. She studied drawing, painting and design in the various disciplines of theatre, fine art and textile design and has been creating and studying fine art ever since. Annette has lectured at the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension on colour and taught art techniques at the Strathcona County Arts Program. Her paintings are included in public, corporate and private art collections in Canada and the U.K.

Annette chooses to paint ever present subjects and experiences that are often considered unremarkable and uses tools and techniques that do not allow precise or overly predictable markings.

In this Visual Memory series Annette starts each piece by pouring and spreading paint on the horizontal canvas and then sit the canvas in front of her. The beginning of an image appears as her memory of places and moments in time connect with what she on the canvas. She thinks of views through the windshield of her care of the places that she has visited that took her breath away; the mountain storms, the lakeside sunsets, the prairie blue skis, sun dappled hills and lush swaying gasses and wildflowers in southwestern Alberta … all of it. One the memory or idea from the initial underpainting has begun she further develops it as loosely as possible as a resonant portrayal in time rather than an accurate illustration of a place.
